Catbird Review

Fledgling Listing: This project is new and has been listed with us for less than six months.

About

Our title is not only an homage to the little gray birds that populate our beloved New England woods; it also defines our mission. The word itself is a dichotomy, an amalgamation of a predator and its prey, the hunter and the hunted. The real catbirds are aptly named: they are birds that mew like cats. Their voices are surprising, wondrous, and yet familiar. After all, the catbird is common, an everyday visitor. For all that it is special, it is also ubiquitous.

Like this namesake, Catbird Review searches for voices that are unique, yet relatable. We are fascinated by dichotomy, by the unexpected beauty of two different things, seen together. Consequently, we want the poems and artwork in our magazine to showcase a spectrum of genre, form, subject, and voice. By setting these distinct works side by side, we hope to illuminate new elements in each one. At its best, a literary magazine is an exercise in curation. We hope the print and online spaces we curate will transform each work by putting it in conversation with another. Art, after all, is a conversation. We can’t wait to hear what you have to say.

Collapse section Poetry Open

We are looking for poems that rattle the bones and inspire the spirit, poems that speak to the individuality of experience and the universality of existence. We are inspired by movement, musicality, moments in time, and striking wordplay. We want the known made strange, and the strange made known. We welcome formal poems, rhyming poems, poems in new formats, and poems that cross genres, as well as free verse in the usual formats. If your work bucks trends, if your poem hasn’t found a home anywhere else, it may be just what we’re looking for. We welcome work by writers at all stages of their careers.

Collapse section Visual Art Open

We welcome submissions of visual artwork, including digital art, photography, graphic design, illustrations, and high-quality pictures of sculpture, mixed media, and paintings. We’re looking for artwork that strikes a cord, starts a conversation, or feels immediately familiar. We are fascinated by explorations of composition, light, and movement. Abstract or realistic, conceptual or pop art – we don’t like to restrict by genre or subject matter. What stands out most is the heart of the piece, the story it tells. Whether it shows a quiet moment or a powerful scene, if it speaks to a human truth, we want to see it. We are looking for original art, so please no cartoons or transformative fan-works.
