Empty Oaks Permanently Closed: This project is permanently closed to submissions (March 2016). We provide the following information as an archive. About Well-imagined and empathetic characters are a must. If you want to curry our favour further, we’re suckers for vivid descriptive writing, unusual places and original settings. We drool over spare, crisp and controlled prose. We get dewy-eyed over social realism and social commentary, which can be a rare thing in genre fiction. We love to read work from under-represented voices or about marginalized individuals and groups, resistance, rebellion and the struggles against oppression. And we have a mile-wide soft spot for folk stories, myths, giant allegories and fables, ‘topias of either prefix, classic ghost stories and shit-the-bed horror, among other things. Above all, we want work that has a point. We like Shirley Jackson, Ursula K Le Guin, John Wyndham, Robert Aickman, J G Ballard, Algernon Blackwood, Doris Lessing, Angela Carter, J Sheridan Le Fanu, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Robert W Chambers, Mervyn Peake, Marge Piercy and Margaret Atwood. If your work owes a debt to any of the above then we would be very curious to read it.
