Foreign Literary

This project is on indefinite hiatus. Check their site to find out whether this is a submission and/or publication hiatus. (September 2022)

About

Foreign is a literary journal that seeks to read and publish fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry related—somehow– to life away from home. This can be life in a foreign land—where different languages, cultures and needs are ripe settings for interesting lives and characters; but anywhere that cultures and identities intersect will do. We don’t necessarily need tales of exile, but we’d love to read one if you have it. In the spirit of Hemingway, Melville, Gilbert, Iyer, Theroux, Thoreau, Hunter S. Thompson, Cheryl Strayed, George Orwell, Graham Greene, David Mitchell, James Baldwin, Mohsim Hamid, Min Jin Lee, Malcolm Lowry, Paul Bowles, the Romantics, the Beats– let us read your work. We are not interested in general travel tales, or helpful tips for backpacking through Bali, but tales of being human. Break our hearts. Show us desire and fear. Show us loss. Make us laugh.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the project being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the project meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
