About

In April 2017, we founded Guesthouse as we stood on the edge of a precipice. As two women approaching the end of our MFA candidacies at the University of Iowa (Erin in fiction and Jane in poetry), the future was a daunting place. The political climate was a china shop and our leader the proverbial bull, sustainable jobs in academia were looking dimmer and dimmer, and we wanted a platform that allowed us to feature high-caliber art in a community-based, interdisciplinary, and malleable environment. With one another, and with our peers from Iowa City and beyond, we want to create a place to host the best and brightest minds in modern writing. We decided to call our journal Guesthouse to celebrate the protean and transient nature of the magazine format that allows us to move and expand at the speed of time and stake a claim in contemporary art, literature, journalism, and more.
