About

60 members set this magazine as a Favorite.

Humana Obscura is an independent literary magazine that seeks to publish the best of new, emerging, and established writers and artists in what we like to call the “nature space.” As our name suggests—”obscured human”—we focus on work where the human element is concealed but not entirely absent, aiming to revive the genre of nature-centric poetry and artwork in today’s modern world while providing a platform for new voices. Founded in 2020, Humana Obscura's mission is to publish and promote the best work of today’s new voices and talents. The publication's intention is to inspire readers and enrich their lives while providing an inclusive space for elevating the voices and creative work of its contributors. We’re after work that observes the natural world and examines the relationship we have to it and to one another while illuminating the struggles of the human condition. We tend to favor work that is unexpected, real, evocative, yet subtle, with a strong sense of place and strong imagery. We like contemporary, but we’re a bit old school in that we shy away from publishing work that references technology—like your iPhone or Tinder or TikTok… We will not publish political pieces, poetry that rhymes, or work that is fantastical in nature or of the horror genre. We steer away from work that is entirely anthropocentric. Surprise us. Delight us. Haunt us. Make us keep thinking about your piece long after we’ve read it or viewed it.

Fees Notice: This project charges fees (or requires purchases) for all submissions, and they do not offer monetary payment for accepted submissions. The fee is USD $5.
