About

The Canary Press is Australia’s greatest (and possibly only) short story magazine. It was founded in 2013, on the back porch of a shared apartment, in an elaborate attempt to avoid doing the dishes. We started off delivering magazines to local bookstores on bicycles, and sending letters to authors on the backs of unpaid electrical bills. But the goshdarndest readership has rallied around this little magazine, and around the short story. The Canary Press now has a national distribution. You can find it in bookstores, newsagents, cafes and airports all around Australia. We publish new and local writers alongside some of the finest from Australia and overseas, like Jim Shepard, Margo Lanagan, Josephine Rowe, Etgar Keret, Elizabeth Harrower and George Saunders. If you don’t know these people, fear not! We’ve been dying to introduce you. And many others, too. Every issue is beautifully illustrated, and also features a classic reprint that celebrates the short story form.
