The Night Outside seeks poetry and creative nonfiction that hammers us, work that reaches out from the page and shakes us. We want to publish excellent, astonishing work that we wish we'd written ourselves. We hope to publish new and emerging writers alongside well-established voices. The Night Outside will publish new issues quarterly, with a featured writer in each issue. Send us the best you've got, the best you have inside you.

We are especially interested in lyric essays, though we’re not entirely sure what a lyric essay actually is. Surprise us. While that is our special interest, we are also interested in personal essay and memoir. Anything with rich, imagistic language is likely to catch our eye, but we’re always open to a well-told, true story.

It’s hard for us to say what poems we’ll like, but we’ll know them when we see them. Some of our favorite poets are Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, e.e.cummings, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Sharon Olds, Jane Hirschfield, T.S. Eliot, Zachary Schomburg, Bob Hicok, and Mary Ruefle. We are especially interested in work that challenges conventions, work that stands out in the noisy crowd of contemporary poetry. While we aren’t likely to publish sing-song rhyme, we are open to excellent formal poetry. A really great villanelle might just knock our socks off. And we love prose poems.
