Tinderbox Editions Anthology of Lyric Essays

A project of Tinderbox Editions (see other related projects).

Permanently Closed: This project is permanently closed to submissions. We provide the following information as an archive.

About

We've always been interested in the convergence of the poem and the essay--the places in which the prose poem grows into something more expansive, and while rooted in the exploration of the personal essay, also has a strong focus on language, rhythms, disconnections, and reconnections. In 2017, Tinderbox Editions will publish an anthology of lyric essays. Thus far, we have accepted work from writers such as Jenny Boully, Sarah Vap, Traci Brimhall, Torrey Peters, Deesha Philyaw, Katie Leo, and Sarah Blake, among others. We are looking for the pieces that complicate both poetry and prose. We are looking for the lyric essay, as opposed to essays that rely on lyric language (also beautiful, but not quite the same). There's a lot of room in defining the lyric essay, but we think writers such as Maggie Nelson, Claudia Rankine, and Eliot Weinberger continually master it, and you can find great examples in individual books, such as MOTHERs by Rachel Zucker, Ventifacts by C
