About

Swamp Biscuits & Tea is an online journal of imaginative short fiction. Though magic realism is our primary focus, our journal strives to coalesce an interesting variety of styles and genres, of strangeness and familiarity, into a weird and wonderful gumbo that is uniquely our own.

For us, imagination is everything. Specifically, our preferences veer toward any of the following classifications: magic realism, literary fiction, slipstream, noir, surrealist, bizarro, weird tale, experimental, science fiction, absurdist, mystery, hardboiled, quirky, fantasy, or any combination of these. We will gladly consider other classifications as well, especially if a story challenges boundaries and inadvertently invents its own classification. Stories with a speculative twist are given preference, but to us, a good story is a good story. We sometimes like humor, but only if it is witty, intelligent, or completely childish. We like dreamy, imaginative, and/or warped realities, which may be drug-induced or otherwise. We like samurai stories and mariachi bands. We like deep plots—the kind you can get lost in without even realizing it. We like characters and settings that are colorful, interesting and memorable. We like original voices, excellent grammar and tight sentence structure. We like strong dialogue, and plenty of it. Finally, we like—and will exclusively publish—only the most unique, superbly written stories of fiction, whether they be from seasoned, award-winning authors or from highly gifted, unpublished newcomers.
