About

404 Ink was founded by Heather McDaid & Laura Jones-Rivera in 2016 with the view that publishing could be a little louder and a little more fun. We still feel that way today.

Our goal is to support new and emerging writers’ careers, and we believe in quality over quantity. That is, not publishing to fill a schedule but publishing because that book truly needs to be read.

Our authors and books have won awards including the Saltire Society First Book of the Year, Outstanding Literature Award at the Scottish Culture Awards, and are Scottish Book Trust New Writers Awardees, as well as appearing in The List Hot 100, and shortlisted for many more. They’ve appeared in Huffington Post, Elle, Alternative Press, New York Magazine, Oprah.com, CNN, Bustle, Kerrang!, The Guardian, The Times, and more locally, nationally and internationally.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the project being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the project meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • For book publishers, it is standard to submit a cover letter, synopsis, and sample instead of the full manuscript. Do this unless otherwise instructed.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
