Grave Empire uncompromising horror literature

Fledgling Listing: This project is new and has been listed with us for less than six months.

About

Grave Empire has no time or patience for the established norms of horror publishing. Cultish and uncompromising, this independent press champions disturbing horror fiction with an emphasis on craft excellence and artistic fearlessness.

Grave Empire will excavate the darkness at the heart of polite society and individual consciousness with works that are transgressive, literary yet accessible, and truly scary. This press does not aim to “transcend” or “elevate” the horror genre, but to become its apotheosis.

Fiction Temp Closed

Grave Empire seeks previously unpublished horror fiction. As a genre, horror is legion and comes in many forms. This independent press is specifically interested in the traditions of existential and psychological dread, supernatural and cosmic horror, as well as works engaging with social, cultural, institutional, and everyday evils. The ideal acquisition is literary without pretense, iconoclastic, inventive, and decidedly unnerving.

Some authors who influenced the formation of Grave Empire include Brian Evenson, Victor LaValle, Clive Barker, Tananarive Due, Mariana Enriquez, Shirley Jackson, Ira Levin, HP Lovecraft, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Before Submitting

We cannot guarantee that the information on this page is correct. It is not unusual for publications to evolve or close without notice. We do our best to keep up, but it isn't always possible. Duotrope listings do not imply endorsement or recommendation of the project being listed. Before submitting, you should use your own judgment to determine whether the project meets your standards.

  • Always read the full guidelines provided by the publisher.
  • Try to read at least one previous publication to get a better idea of what the editor would like to see.
  • Unless the publisher's guidelines state otherwise, always use industry standard manuscript formatting.
  • For book publishers, it is standard to submit a cover letter, synopsis, and sample instead of the full manuscript. Do this unless otherwise instructed.
  • Be professional, patient, and persistent.
