Emma Bal

An agent with Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency (see other agents at this agency).

About

Emma Bal joined the MM Agency 5 years ago and has very quickly established an exciting and reputable non-fiction list, securing many major deals for her clients around the world. She represents leading experts in the arts, humanities and sciences such as Roopika Risam, Rebecca Clifford, Maikel Kuijpers, Nikki Ikani, Eleanor Chan, Anne Irfan, Ayala Panievsky, Miranda Malins, Jonathan R. Goodman, Isabella Rosner and Lauren Working; and writers across subjects like nature, food, travel, politics, psychology and pop-culture including Corinne Fowler, Dina Macki, Diyora Shadijanova, Keshia Sakarah, Elizabeth Wainwright, Marianne Brown, Catherine Carr, and Anna Ansari. She was featured in Elle’s article ‘Meet the Women Revolutionising the Publishing Industry’ where she discussed the need for more representation in non-fiction.

She is looking for passionate and ambitious collaborators who want to share their ideas with the world.

Nonfiction Open

Thought-provoking non-fiction across the arts, humanities, and sciences:

I want to hear from academics and thinkers from around the world who work across a range of disciplines and feel strongly about sharing their ideas with general readers. I particularly like global histories, histories of ideas, original biographies and ambitious science books on humans and animals.

Investigative journalism and narrative non-fiction:

I would like to find more writers and journalists following and documenting people, places, institutions and phenomena, to illuminate wider themes through quality storytelling.

Cookery and food writing:

I love food and how it can be a gateway to culture, ideas, history and human connection. I would like to hear from cooks, writers and researchers with fresh approaches to how we think about, grow, cook, and eat food.

Nature and Travel Writing:

I grew up in the countryside and I’m fascinated by the natural world and the different relationships we have to our evolving landscape. I also admire books that transport readers to less familiar geographies to tell a wider story.

Memoir:

Everyone has a story to tell but the ones I am looking for have to be original and usually funny too.

Illustrated projects:

I am a fan of visually led books that are curious, stimulating and of course beautiful.

Agent Impersonation Scams are becoming commonplace.
A legitimate agent will not contact you and request money to represent you. Never pay an agent an up-front fee. That is not how literary agent representation works. Agents earn a commission only after they've landed a publishing deal for you. Also, agents scarcely ever contact writers. If an agent that you haven't queried contacts you about representation, be suspicious. Look up the agent and check if the email address is correct for that agent/agency.
