About

Hands Up Don't Shoot will explore what it means to be black in America. The concept for the feature stemmed from outrage towards the unchecked police brutality and institutionalized racism in America that allows for the constant murder of black citizens, defying any claim that this country is “post-racial”. The injustice of Michael Brown's death, along with the deaths of hundreds of other black children who were killed for the color of their skin, has been tragically normalized in our society. However, the riots and protests taking place all over the world, reflect a demand for change. Hands Up Don’t Shoot will exclusively feature African-Americans creating art out of this injustice. We want this feature to be a platform specifically for the voices of black Americans who experience this strain of racism daily. We respectfully ask that those who are not African-American refrain from submitting to this feature.
