About

We invite well-written and thoughtful explorations through memoir, essay, fiction and poetry about the dynamics and impact of R-E-S-P-E-C-T in our lives. What is respect exactly? We can all feel when it is lacking—and we respond viscerally, often in ways that aren't pretty. Its absence makes us feel powerless, demeaned—and vengeful. No one is immune and we use that dysphoria as justification for all manner of cruelties, disparagements, and dismissals on our own part. Any election year demonstrates that dramatically, with consequences that don't disappear with the election results. Respect may be hard to describe, but it is crucial to positive human relationships at all ages, across all social divides. It isn't the same as fear or obsequiousness or dependency or honor or admiration or love or kindness or sympathy or friendship or basic trust. Are we as well attuned to its presence as we are to our own fear of its absence? Even more importantly, are we as adept at giving it to others as we are at demanding it for ourselves? Is it something you can decide to give or receive, or is it something far more instinctual, impervious to conscious intentions? If so, what body and emotional states, what forms of social relations and social structures, encourage it? We invite writers of all ages and cultures to help us explore this theme.
