We admire all of the indie lit and art mags out there-- this work is hard and often thankless (payless!), and building spaces for the world to share and be a part of art anyway is huge.
For specifics, some that we particularly admire are Buckman Journal and their very cool book vending machines, Maudlin House, and FENCE.

From the very beginning, Apricity was created because so many lit and art mags don't publish multimedia and dance works. Dance in particular has very few avenues for publication and often only exists in the moments its performed. While that is a beautiful aspect of dance, dance, like every other art form, deserves to be experienced and seen by people regardless of if they happened to be in the right place at the right time. That's also why we publish all of our issues online and for free, so that everyone can access art at any time.

Please read the submission guidelines! We have them for a reason, and when you don't read them before submitting it's quite obvious. Also, all of our issues are on our website and free to peruse and download-- take a look at our past issues to see the types of work we tend to publish! We publish all kinds of work, but we do have some preferences towards tone and vibe that pop up clearly in our past issues.

We love a short bio, but we don't care about cover letters. Bios are welcome to include past publication credits and awards, but we also love short and funny bios, weird bios, simple bios-- the world is your oyster there. We choose the work we publish because of the work, not the submitter!

We read all of the work submitted from top to bottom, start to finish. We want to make sure we give the full work consideration before we make a decision!
Exceptions: work that very clearly has not been edited fully. We publish work as is, so if it still has a myriad of grammatical and spelling errors, we can't and won't publish it, even if we like the story/poem otherwise.

Each issue has shown up differently in terms of my process, but generally I like to check in on our submissions as often as I have the time. Right now this means weekly submission review and dedicating some hours to sitting down with some tea and my laptop to review all of the fantastic submissions we receive. I also run our website and socials, so I try to stay up on those things at the same time. I have a full time job outside of Apricity as well as a variety of other commitments, but Apricity is a deep love of mine that I will always find time and resources for.

We don't edit pieces at all! We only accept fully edited and complete works, as is. This can be unfortunate if we find a piece we like but it still needs some editing work, but we just don't have the time to edit.

Yes we do! We submit our published writers to both the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net.

Apricity is a labor of love and is fully funded by me. Since its founding in 2015, I have owned all the operating costs for the magazine (website, submission manager, etc). Because of this, we aren't currently able to pay our artists or editors, but we hope to secure funding in the future to make that a reality!
