Editor Interview: Little Old Lady Comedy

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

Literary & visual humor

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

LOL Comedy stands out for its focus on timeless humor and inventive takes on the everyday (or even the fantastical). We have a particular love for comedic poetry and open letters, two areas where are contributors particularly shine. Our little old lady mascot embodies the perspective of someone who’s seen it all and developed a refined, enduring taste in humor, guiding our curatorial eye. We celebrate work that’s clever, surprising, and thoughtfully funny, creating a space where readers of all generations can discover comedy that lasts beyond the moment.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

For those considering submitting to LOL Comedy, focus on creating work that’s engaging and consistently funny. If you’re submitting literary works, we love creative formats, but the piece should be well-written and the humor should carry the piece throughout. For cartoons and comics, strong, high-quality artwork is just as important as the joke itself. We also do not accept pieces created by AI (everything should be your original work). Above all, bring your unique voice and have fun with it!

Describe the ideal submission.

The perfect piece is clever, thoughtful, and unexpected in a pleasing way. It offers a unique outlook on the mundane or fantastical, with a clear point, accessible narrative, and a successful resolution. It’s well-written, playful yet grounded, and makes us laugh, smile, or at least blow air through our noses. Brevity is appreciated, and every line should feel purposeful - no fluff, cheap comedy, or overdone tropes.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

We read each submission in full to honor the hard work and dedication our contributors put into their creations.

What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

We don’t tolerate any form of discrimination or hate in submitted work. If a piece contains even a hint of something that feels harmful or exclusionary, it’s flagged and brought to the full editorial team for discussion. That extra step ensures we’re aligned on our values and that everything we publish reflects the kind of inclusive, welcoming humor we stand for.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

We don’t edit submissions; pieces need to be ready to publish as-is. If we notice an obvious grammar or spelling mistake, we’ll check with the author to confirm whether it was intentional before making any correction.

How is your project funded?

We currently do not receive any outside funding beyond what our readers/contributors donate via our patreon: https://www.patreon.com/littleoldladycomedy.

How do you promote your project and published authors/artists?

We choose a featured piece every week and display it prominently on our homepage for the duration of its run. We also post 1-2 authors’ headshots and snippets of their work on our Instagram. We love lifting up our contributors and helping their pieces reach new readers!
