Editor Interview: Verse of April

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

Homage to the poets

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

Verse of April is a project of homage to the poets, and we believe in the many forms and iterations tribute can take on. Each one of our editions features special visual art and trailers to promote the life of the issue and its contributors. We take seriously the task of being a unique venue with a unique mission, so our publication is decidedly intimate and a bit alternative.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Write to us and share your questions and ideas. We are so open and curious about how different voices approach celebrating the poet, the poem.

Describe the ideal submission.

We don't have an ideal submission, and we reject the notion!

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

We want to get to know our contributors. We are not as concerned with the politics of a publication history.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

We read all submissions all the way through. No exceptions. If you've found us, we'll listen to you.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

We believe that a piece belongs to the writer and that ultimate decisions about what form a work takes must be examined and approved by the author. That said, we do read as editors and take seriously what editors can do to assist writers, so we very well might open an editorial conversation with a person in whose work we are interested.
