Editor Interview: Vector

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

SF articles and reviews

What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

Neon Hemlock, Erewhon, Foundation, khoreo magazine

If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

We aim to publish a broad cross-section of writers, both established and early-career academics, and solicit artwork from contemporary artists. I must shout-out our regular columnists, the wonderful Paul Kincaid, Nick Hubble, and Paul Graham-Raven.

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

Vector combines fan writing - in the form of reviews, opinion pieces, and regular columns - with academic articles, on a wide range of topics related to sf/f.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Read the journal (and/or the online blog) to get a feel for the tone and style. And follow your passions! If there's something you want to write about - do write in with a pitch!

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

A brief cover letter is always appreciated, and previous publication credits are welcome but not necessary. You can certainly be a first-time author for 'Vector.'

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

Both the editorial team and I read all submissions carefully, in their entirety, before making a decision.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

Depending on the piece, submissions are usually read by at least two editors, as well as the EiC. Editing can vary from light to substantial (and in some cases, a revised draft may be requested).

How do you promote your project and published authors/artists?

Via our social media channels and blog, as well as in BSFA's print venues
