Susan Ginsburg

An agent with Writers House LLC (see other agents at this agency).

About

I’ve been in the business for over 35 years, and with Writers House for 25. I got my start on the editorial side, as editor-in-chief of St. Martin’s and Atheneum Books and Executive Editor of Pocket Books at Simon & Schuster, where I had the fortune to publish such wonderful writers as Alice Walker (The Color Purple) and John Irving (The World According to Garp). My agenting career has spanned both fiction and non-fiction, and I continue to work closely with all my authors editorially. I am currently looking for commercial and literary fiction—particularly, particularly voice-driven narratives filled with emotionally compelling characters—as well as rich narrative non-fiction and unique memoirs.

Collapse section Fiction Open

I’m currently looking for upmarket, book club, and literary fiction—particularly voice-driven narratives in unique settings, filled with emotionally compelling characters. I’m interested in fiction with a provocative, razor-sharp approach to complex social issues, especially those exploring love, friendship, and power dynamics. I’m also open to crossover YA/adult authors, especially those transitioning from YA to adult themes, though I’m open to the unexpected!

For nonfiction, I gravitate toward works that explore the intersections of history, science, fashion, food, culture, and social justice, often uncovering hidden stories and overlooked details. I enjoy well-researched narratives that make complex topics accessible and provide practical takeaways. Ultimately, my nonfiction preferences reflect a deep curiosity about the human experience, a love for compelling storytelling, and an interest in how people, ideas, and movements shape the world.

Agent Impersonation Scams are becoming commonplace.
A legitimate agent will not contact you and request money to represent you. Never pay an agent an up-front fee. That is not how literary agent representation works. Agents earn a commission only after they've landed a publishing deal for you. Also, agents scarcely ever contact writers. If an agent that you haven't queried contacts you about representation, be suspicious. Look up the agent and check if the email address is correct for that agent/agency.
