Editor Interview: Porcupine Literary

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

Teacher-y Words

What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

We admire and read so many journals! Some of our favorites: Smokelong Quarterly, Pidgeonholes, JMWW, Pithead Chapel, X-Ray, Lost Balloon, Craft, Jellyfish Review, The Forge, Atticus Review, Cease Cows, Cotton Xenomorph, Barren Magazine...I could list 100 more!

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

We focus entirely on work that explores teaching and the classroom. And we like our pieces to be sharp, dark, even ugly if necessary! No Hallmark moments or teacher-inspiration -- just honesty.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Read our journal first! Then tell us something real.

What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

They send us submissions that aren't about teaching! Also, they sometimes forget to label their prose as fiction or cnf.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

Nah. Though I would love to know if this is your first publication!

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

We only take subs that are 3000 words or less, so we read every word.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

We work with authors quite a bit if we see potential!

Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

We nominate our pieces for Best of the Net, Best Microfiction, Pushcart, Best American Essays, and more!
