Afterimage features unique, high-quality coverage of digital media, film, games, photography, television, video, and visual arts, as well as addresses important issues and debates within art history, media studies, visual and cultural studies, and related fields. In addition to in-depth feature articles, the journal publishes book and exhibition reviews as well as conference and festival reports. We are truly international and multidisciplinary in terms of our coverage and our contributors.

Ideal peer-reviewed submissions are on mission and include all the requisite elements (per the journal's website). Non-peer-reviewed submissions should be on mission and timely.

Sending coverage of work that is not within our purview (e.g., reviews of painting exhibitions or book on environmental concerns with no artworld connection).
As an academic journal housed at a university press, we also do not hire freelancers—or provide monetary compensation to contributors at all.

We do appreciate brief cover letters and resumes, including lists of previous publication credits.

I read everything to the end if it is on mission. Articles submitted for peer-review are assessed and if approved for furfurtherhter vetting, they are then entered into that process.

Research-based articles get a blind peer review by 2-3 readers.

We provide fact-checking followed by substantive and line editing, as many rounds as it takes. The final edit is then copyedited by the Press. I proofread it again before submitting the piece to the journal and then again once it is in layout. Occasionally peer reviewers request an accepted piece is professionally copyedited before submitted again toward publication.
