Editor Interview: True Chili

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

Cowboy Literature

What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

Dead Mule School of Southern Literature

If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

Edgar Allan Poe
Mark Twain

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

We look exclusively for cowboy and western-themed poems and short stories.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Don't overdo your bio. Short, concise and funny helps. We really don't care how often a person has been published before or how big the publication was.

Describe the ideal submission.

We love short works. This would be something that gets to the point quickly. A story that drags is easily dismissed.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

We don't care about previous submissions. Short cover letters are preferable. Bios should be two or three sentences, max. In fact, someone should do seminary or lecture at a writer's conference about how to write bios for magazines.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

Most are read to the end. That being said, we can sometimes tell very quickly if a piece will not be accepted.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

Very little. We expect each piece to be edited and revised by the author. We will fix obvious typos or mispellings, but that's about it.

Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

We have not yet, but are open to do so. We do publish some very fine writers.
