Editor Interview: Changing Skies

We ensure fairness in our publication by blind-reviewing every piece we receive. We are run by graduate and undergraduate students at CU Boulder, and publish international writers alongside CU Boulder students to create an interesting mix of perspectives and cultures.

Read our past issues to see what we publish, which are published on our website at hindsightjournal.org. We are always looking for new submissions and love reading new pieces, especially anything taking fresh perspectives on the climate crisis (such as optimism). While we love memoir, we're also looking for journalistic or scholarly pieces that drive the language in creative ways.

They send to the wrong category or title. We're also sent fiction, which we don't publish.

We don't care about cover letters or publication credits. All submissions go through blind review during first read, and we never choose pieces based on authorship. We want to publish debut and experienced writers together.

Each piece is read at least four times by different editors before an initial verdict. Our acquisitions meetings lead to more in-depth reading for some pieces. We hope never to miss good writing.

Heavy editorial work might factor into our choice. We also consider the publication medium in case an online feature better suits a piece. Our editors check for AI usage and fact-check all pieces.

We more often provide comments, suggestions, and citation requests than changing pieces outright. We see editing as a collaborative practice.

We will be nominating pieces for the Pushcart Prizes for the first time this year.
