Courtney Donovan

An agent with Writers House LLC (see other agents at this agency).

About

I began my career at the agency first as an intern and then as an assistant to Steven Malk, and have worked closely with him and his list of authors and illustrators over the past six years. I am excited to now be building my own list as a junior agent.

I’m primarily looking for authors of Middle Grade, Young Adult, New Adult, and Adult commercial and literary fiction, as well as Graphic Novels for all ages. I'm actively seeking stories that reflect diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, and perspectives.

Fiction Open

Middle Grade

Middle-grade fiction holds a special place in my heart. I'm on the lookout for high-concept, imaginative tales, relatable characters, and themes that resonate with young readers. From contemporary stories to fantasy and science fiction, I'm open to a wide range of genres, though I generally prefer a speculative element or hint of magic. Give me your dragons, spaceships, secret societies, and fantasy inspired from mythologies all over the world!

Young Adult

As with middle grade, I am especially drawn to fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal. I love immersive worlds, atmospheric settings, unique magic systems, motley crews, and planet-faring adventures.

While I’ve primarily been focusing on children’s books, I’m beginning to build out my adult list, as well. I have omnivorous taste in adult fiction, though as with MG and YA, I am particularly drawn to the speculative. My tastes were informed by a healthy diet of Jane Austen, Anne McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Charlaine Harris, Melanie Rawn, Michael Crichton, and of course JRR Tolkien and Robert Jordan.

Agent Impersonation Scams are becoming commonplace.
A legitimate agent will not contact you and request money to represent you. Never pay an agent an up-front fee. That is not how literary agent representation works. Agents earn a commission only after they've landed a publishing deal for you. Also, agents scarcely ever contact writers. If an agent that you haven't queried contacts you about representation, be suspicious. Look up the agent and check if the email address is correct for that agent/agency.
