Editor Interview: Sonar 4 Publications

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

Ebook and print

What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

There are so many that I admire. Flashes in the Dark, Static Movement, Pill Hill Press to just to name a few.

If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

Brian L Porter and Eric S Brown are two of my favorites. Of Course I love Dean Koontz and Stephen King. Still so many out there.

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

Not all, but some give lower royalties than we do for one. Our percentages are higher for ebooks, print and we offer a small advance which some of the independent publishers do not.
We help with promotion, no matter how small and work with the author. We love writing and what the authors bring to the world. We find that extremely exciting.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Read the guidelines first. It helps us to be able to understand your material. Making sure as well that you don't submit again a manuscript we have already rejected, because more than likely we will reject it again as we did not like the content to begin with. Also, more different than what's out there in the main market.

Describe the ideal submission.

The ideal submission would be a writer who really cares about his story, his characters. We appreciate this as we can see the passion in the story. One that the author has taken the time to write to us directly and followed the guidelines and does not assume we will automatically like his story or are desperate in need of anything because we are a small publishing company.

What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

They assume that since we are a small publishing company that they can ignore the guidelines and basically be rude to us off the bat. Those will get an automatic rejection from us.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

When someone submits to us a bit about why they are submitting the story, perhaps a bit about their writing background. We love to see the passion a writer has about their story.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

We always look at what we require initially, which are the first 3 chapters or first 10 pages and if we don't like it we send a rejection letter or if we do we ask for the full manuscript.

What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

There are two people that read it over and then we talk together about what makes the story work or not. If it works, then we accept it. And we are mostly talking about the meat of the story, the characters and what is involved with them.

What is a day in the life of an editor like for you?

Busy. Since we are a small publishing company we do a lot of promotional work between a small group of people. Looking over submissions, setting up publishing books, paying advances and much more. Also, we like to keep in contact with authors as much as possible so they and we have up to date information.
