Editor Interview: Bold Strokes Books

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

LGBTQ fiction

If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

Stieg Larsen, James Lee Burke, Nora Roberts, Kim Harrison, Lee Child, Larissa Ilone, Sue Grafton, Jonathan Franzan, MIchael Cunningham, Lilith St. Crowe

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

Broad list parameters and aggressive marketing

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Read the submission guidelines and send your best work (proofread the query letter and self-edit the manuscript before submission).

Describe the ideal submission.

Original treatment of a classic plot or an original voice with commercial appeal. We can't publish what we can't sell!

What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

Send materials we do not publish.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

A bio should include age, occupation, education, and writing/publication history as a minimum.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

20% we reject after one to three chapters, the rest we skim-read the entire work even if rejection is anticipated.

What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

An editorial assessment (general overview of the required edits is provided to publisher).
