If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

Burroughs, Beckett, Ginsberg, Genet, Orwell, Duras, etc.

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

ER is more willing to take risks than other comparably popular publications. Commitment to social justice integral to our editorial outlook.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Please read an issue first. We're online and no paywall, so there's no excuse.

Describe the ideal submission.

Deals with a subject that is politically or socially relevant from an interesting non-traditional perspective, with wit, humor, sensuality or sadness. When we put it down, we remember it.

What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

Our guidelines are not very stringent. Read the magazine to get an idea what we're about.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

Minimal description, where previously published always of interest.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

Depends on who is reading the submission. Usually a few sentences.

What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

If an editor has questions, we take it to the group.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

If a piece is accepted, we will work closely with the author and provide editing as needed, including substantive editing. We always proofread. Author gets to approve final edits.

Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

No.
