Editor Interview: ActiveMuse

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

Unique voices and ideas

What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

Agni, Granta, Paris Review

If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Ayan Rand,

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

We do not discriminate on any worth or not worth it. Just write and submit.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Read the mags, various collections, competition and space is tough. Give it your best. Use the Shunn template given on the submission page, no AI please

Describe the ideal submission.

Good story, great opening, a new perspective,

What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

They do not use the Shunn template, do not follow 3000 word limit, poems are more than 24 lines.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

Not much. We do not bother about credits, just the work.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

YES. We have at least three rounds of review. We read the whole work before deciding

What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

Just the three reviews. Now we have another problem of running it through AI detectors.

What is a day in the life of an editor like for you?

We all work at regular jobs for a living. ActiveMuse is a passion that we take up late light and and weekends

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

Just grammar checks only. No editing. We upload without further approve from the authors. We expect the work to be polished.

Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

Yes. For Best of Net and Pushcard.

How is your project funded?

Everything out our pocket. We are a no-fee, no-pay. We do this out of a passion to help unknown authors to get their first break. We have several established authors also.

How do you promote your project and published authors/artists?

We promote on several Facebook groups, and on X. Most of it through Duotrope, word-of-mouth
