Editor Interview: Fiery Scribe Review

Q: Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

A: Fiery, evocative works

Q: What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

A: Brittle Paper and CRAFT Literary are my biggest inspirations.

Q: If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

A: We have a long list of amazing contributors, but some of our favourites include Taylor Stoneman, Courtney Le Blanc, Enit'ayanfe Ayosojumi Akinsanya, Arya Kanojia, Ebukun Ogunyemi, Clara McShane, and Elizabeth M. Castillo.

Q: What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

A: Well, all we are concerned with is the fire.

Q: What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

A: We no longer fancy the generic, so send us something artistically fresh—of course, not forgetting the fiery ambience.

Q: Describe the ideal submission.

A: Works that contain a large piece of your heart—enclosed in a word document, exuding some fresh appeal, and saying some passionate stuff.

Q: What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

A: Bios in the first person or over 100 words can be bothersome. We don't need your contact information; however, social media handles may be necessary when promoting your work.

Q: How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

A: As for those things about nationality, publication history—what else?—they don't matter to us. We just want to read works that fit our requirements.

Q: If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

A: We typically read till the end—who knows, there may be some convincing surprise. There are times we get disconnected right from the first few lines or paragraphs, but we read it all up to fulfil all righteousness.

Q: What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

A: Nothing much. If we are interested in your piece, we read it a couple more times. The team is busy so we'd rather embrace error-free works. We check, however, for traces of discrimination and transgressions.

Q: How important do you feel it is for publishers to embrace modern technologies?

A: Magazines, these days, are most likely to thrive by embracing modern tech. Social media services help us gain visibility and attract more contributors and admirers. We also work with a submission form for convenience. Remaining traditional may hasten any mag's decline.

Q: How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

A: We only do basic proofreading. The submitter is expected to submit a thoroughly edited manuscript.

Q: Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

A: We've not been doing that; however, we plan to take that up, come August.
