Editor Interview: Concrete Wolf Louis Poetry Book Award

Describe what you publish in 25 characters or less.

Memorable Poetry

What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

Two Sylvias Press, The Poetry Box, Green Linden

If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

Dorianne Laux, Ellen Bass, Alison Luterman, Joseph Millar, Oliver de la Paz, Matthew Dickman, Tim Seibles, James Crews, Danusha Lameris, Sandra Yannone, John Brehm, Cecila Woloch, Kelli Russell Agodon

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

We prefer collections that feel like a whole, a journey through with an arc.

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Read our previous publications and read the work of our judges.

Describe the ideal submission.

Any collection that feels inevitable--could not have been organized any other way. Feels complete from start to finish.

What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

Often the manuscripts do not feel all of a piece but more like a best of.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

Cover letters and previous credits are unnecessary. We let the manuscript speak for itself.

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

Every judge is different, so that would be hard to say.

What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

Final judging.

What is a day in the life of an editor like for you?

The joy of connecting with poets and their poetry and bringing new collections into the world.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

Every manuscript is different but usually very little editing occurs.

Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

We nominate for the Pushcart and some other post publication awards.
