Outsider literature

What other current publications (or publishers) do you admire most?

Expat Press
Apocalypse Confidential
Donotsubmit.net
Misery Tourism
Farewell Transmission
Hobart Pulp

If you publish writing, who are your favorite writers? If you publish art, who are your favorite artists?

Harry Crews
Clarice Lispector
Denis Johnson
Larry Brown
Raymond Carver
Lisa Carver

What sets your publication apart from others that publish similar material?

We come from a DiY music background and utilize similar community ethics with our press

What is the best advice you can give people who are considering submitting work to your publication?

Be part of the outsider/transgressive lit scene I.e. show up to live and virtual readings. Show some interest in our thing. Publish online. Be cool

Describe the ideal submission.

A 20000 word novel best/final yet open to edits that borders on schizophrenic yet coherent. An underlying point beyond postmodern gobbledygook. Heart in it. Grit, edge, realist, and humorous.
Poetry, schizo/transgressive

What do submitters most often get wrong about your submissions process?

Submitting when we are closed to submissions. Not understanding the press and its cohort.

How much do you want to know about the person submitting to you?

No cover letters. If we like it we will zoom and see if our rapport is good.
Previous publication credits are a plus

If you publish writing, how much of a piece do you read before making the decision to reject it?

Multiple editors read the manuscript in its entirety unless it is DOA right away due to not being a good fit.

What additional evaluations, if any, does a piece go through before it is accepted?

Is it weird enough?
Will the author remain an author or is this a whimsical vain shot in the dark? We want equal investment in regard to passion in every publication
Line edit evaluation

What is a day in the life of an editor like for you?

I work an unrelated job and moonlight as a book publisher. We are a small indie press.

How much do you edit an accepted piece prior to publication?

Depends on the manuscript some need more than others, some none at all. The author collaborates on the edits with the editor until consensus is achieved.

Do you nominate work you've published for any national or international awards?

Yes, we’ve sent some to Lambda and Pushcart
